Yeah there are different versions of the different Mp3 encoders out there. itunes-lame is great not sure if itll transcode sd2 files, but itll handle batches by simply setting up a playlist of the files you want to encode. I actually was recomended it by an online song retailer (kinda like itunes, I cant say which company because of an NDA). In the early days of iTunes the quality of Apples mp3 encoder was low, compared with other mp3 encoders or with Apples own AAC. iTunes can be scripted to use LAME instead of the default (fraun.) encoder.

As for the KBPS in VBR, iTunes lets you set a minimum bitrate that you don't want the encoding to ever fall.
